What are carrier oils?

Some essential oils are recommended to be used “neat” (this means that you drop a few drops of oil out of the bottle and apply it directly to your skin). Other essential oils are suggested to be diluted with a carrier oil before applying them to the skin (check the label on your essential oil bottle and/or your reference guide for dilution recommendations). Aside from canola and vegetable oil, most vegetable oils can be used as a carrier oil. Carrier oils prevent skin irritation (because essential oils are so potent), help the body absorb essential oils, extend the life of essential oils, and allow essential oils to be used on sensitive skin. Carrier oils allow you to spread just a few drops of essential oil to a large area of the body. Carrier oils also make it possible for essential oils to be used for massages, creams, lotions, lip balms, rubs, and sugar scrubs.

My three carrier oils…

The three most common carrier oils most oilers tend to use are olive oil, coconut oil, or Young Living V-6 oil (although many other vegetable oils can be used). When I first began using Young Living essential oils, I diluted my oils with olive oil. Nothing fancy, just the plain ole’ organic extra virgin olive oil that we cook with. I used olive oil for a long time because it was simple and something we already had on hand.

As time went on, I became curious about other types of carrier oils. Coconut oil was the second carrier oil that I tried. My hubby and I love coconut oil as a carrier oil! Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, which makes it a perfect carrier oil to use when making essential oil based creams, lotions, rubs, lip balms, sugar scrubs, etc. Coconut oil is easier to apply and seems to do a better job of moisturizing the skin than olive oil does.

My most recent purchase includes Young Living’s V-6 vegetable oil complex. V-6 is an organic carrier oil that is a combination of several different carrier oils (coconut oil, sesame seed oil, grape seed oil, sweet almond oil, sweet germ oil, sunflower seed oil, and olive oil). I love V-6 oil because it nourishes the skin, has a long shelf life, doesn’t clog pores, and will not stain clothes. V-6 is my new favorite carrier oil!

Here are some tips for purchasing your carrier oils…

  • Olive oil: purchase organic extra virgin olive oil. You should be able to find this at your grocery store.
  • Coconut oil: purchase organic, raw, cold pressed coconut oil. High quality coconut oil (organic, raw, cold pressed) can be difficult to find in a grocery store. I ordered mine from My Natural Market. It cost me $20.95 plus $4.95 shipping for a 32 ounce bottle. I don’t have any ties to this company…I just order my coconut oil from them :)

Healthy Smoothie Recipes

I’ve been head over heels crazy for my Young Living essential oils and I had an idea the other week to try a few smoothie recipes with them (many Young Living essential oils are safe for dietary consumption). Keep reading for 5 tasty and healthy smoothie recipes using Young Living essential oils!

You’ll notice that I use spinach in my smoothie recipes. If you haven’t tried making a smoothie with spinach, you are definitely missing out! Spinach adds bulk to your smoothie without the calories (2 cups spinach provides only about 13 calories). Spinach is also jammed packed with nutrients (vitamin A, calcium, vitamin K, folate, manganese, vitamin C, iron, riboflavin, and magnesium). I promise that even if you hate spinach, you will not hate the smoothies that contain spinach (especially the Mango, Spinach, and Orange oil smoothie – this smoothie is so yummy and naturally sweet). 

Experiment with different Young Living essential oils…

It is a-ok even if you only have one or two of the essential oils that I mention below in my smoothie recipes. Most of my smoothie recipes  (except for the Avocado, Chocolate, & Peppermint Oil Smoothie) will likely taste great with any of the Young Living’s citrus oils (Lemon, Lime, Orange, Tangerine, Grapefruit, or Citrus Fresh essential oil).  Go ahead…start experimenting and mix it up :) You will love how these oils enhance the flavor and healthfulness of your smoothie!

Mango, Spinach, & Orange Oil Smoothie (Makes About 2 Cups)

Blend:

  • 2 cups fresh spinach leaves
  • 1 cup chopped mango
  • 1/2 cup vanilla almond milk
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 2-4 drops Young Living Orange essential oil

Healthy Mint Chocolate “Shake” Smoothie (Makes About 2 Cups)

Blend:

  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 cup fresh spinach leaves
  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 cup strawberries
  • 1/2 cup vanilla almond milk
  • 1-2 Tablespoons agave nectar (to taste)
  • 2-3 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder (to taste)
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 1-3 drops Young Living Peppermint essential oil

It’s no chocolate shake, but it is a close healthy second :)

Pineapple, Berry, Spinach, & Lemon Oil Smoothie (Makes About 2 Cups)

Blend:

  • 1/2 cup chopped pineapple
  • 1/2 cup berries (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and/or strawberries)
  • 2 cups fresh spinach leaves
  • 1/2 cup vanilla almond milk
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 2-4 drops Young Living Lemon essential oil

Berry, Banana, & Orange Oil Smoothie (Makes About 2 Cups)

Blend:

  • 1 cup berries (raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, and/or strawberries)
  • 1 banana
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup vanilla almond milk
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 2-4 drops Young Living Orange essential oil

I prefer this smoothie without spinach. However, I occasionally make it with spinach by substituting half of the fruit with 2 cups fresh spinach leaves.

Apple, Oatmeal, Spinach, and Lemon Oil Smoothie (Makes About 2 Cups)

Blend:

  • 2 cups spinach
  • 1/2 cup apple juice
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1 banana
  • 1/4 cup dry quick-cooking oats
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • cinnamon to taste
  • 2-4 drops Young Living Lemon essential oil

This smoothie sounds a little odd, but it is soooo good!

Add a little extra nutrition to your smoothie by adding any of the following ingredients…

  • Add ground flaxseed to your smoothie. Flaxseed contains omega-3 fatty acids, which may help lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation and lower the risk of certain cancers. Flaxseed also contains lignans (a natural antioxidant), and dietary fiber (dietary fiber promotes regular bowel movements, helps keep you feeling full, and may decrease your risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes). I tend to add 2 Tablespoons of flaxseed to most of my smoothies.
  • Add coconut oil to your smoothie. Recently, there is a lot of health hype surrounding coconut oil. I’ll let you Google that one for yourself (you’ll love what you learn about it). Be sure to buy raw, cold pressed, organic coconut oil – that is the good stuff!
  • Add chia seeds to your smoothie. Chia seeds are an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acid. They are also an excellent source of fiber, and contain protein and minerals (including iron, calcium, magnesium and zinc).
  • Add a scoop of protein powder to your smoothie. Your body uses protein to grow, repair muscle tissue, form scars, replace worn out cells, produce new red blood cells, keep your immune system strong, form antibodies, manufacture hormones and enzymes, maintain acid base balance, maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, and keep your hair, nails, bones, skin, and teeth strong. Protein will also help keep you feeling full in between meals and snacks.
