If you’re wondering what Young Living essential oils and oil infused products are good options for pregnant mamas and babies, this is the blog post for you!
One of the top complaints during pregnancy is being nauseous. One of the things that can help keep this at bay is snacking regularly. Young Living’s Pure Protein Complete can be a great choice as it’s a clean and comprehensive protein supplement. It comes in two flavors, Vanilla Spice or Chocolate Deluxe. Both flavors taste super yummy in a smoothie or mixed with vanilla almond milk! Ginger Vitality essential oil can also help settle your stomach (just as ginger gum can). Try adding a drop of Ginger Vitality to a capsule with carrier oil or to a glass of water. If you don’t want to ingest it, try applying 1-2 drops of Ginger essential oil to the stomach and abdomen.
When your baby bump starts growing, your skin can get a little itchy from stretching. Rather than using some of the other moisturizing products on the market that don’t necessarily have the best ingredients, you can make your own (for a lot less)! Below you’ll find a recipe for a DIY body butter that contains shea butter, coconut oil, almond oil, and Lavender and Frankincense essential oil (two of the top skin supporting oils).
Another common complaint during pregnancy is trouble sleeping at night. Incorporating essential oils into your routine can help you relax before bed and promote a good nights rest. Tranquil Roll-on and Peace & Calming (I and II) are two favorites. Both can be applied topically to the wrists, back of neck, behind the ears, and/or on the bottom of the feet. Peace & Calming can also be diffused.
Sometimes pregnant moms and new moms need a little mood lifter and citrus oils are some of the best ones to use. A combo of Tangerine, Grapefruit, Lemon, and Bergamot essential oil make a great diffuser blend. You may also want to make your own happy roll-on with Joy, Grapefruit, and Bergamot essential oil in a 10-ml roller bottle with carrier oil (which can be rolled onto the wrists, back of neck, behind the ears, and/or on the bottom of the feet). *Note: All of these oils are photosensitive and should be applied at night or to areas that will not be exposed when outside during the day.
Staying active during pregnancy is important, but it can become difficult as the baby gets bigger. An Epsom salt bath with oils like Frankincense and Copaiba can really help ease muscle tension and relax your body. You may also want to make your own muscle roll-on with Frankincense, Copaiba, and Idaho Balsam Fir essential oil in a 10-ml roller bottle with carrier oil. Simply roll your blend on tired muscles as needed.
There are a few oily products you may want to keep handy in your diaper bag. Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier, KidScents Tender Tush (use to moisturize and soothe baby’s bottom), and Thieves Spray and Thieves Wipes (use to quickly clean changing tables, shopping carts, restaurant tables and chairs, etc) are some favorites.
Some popular baby products (*sigh…) have been in the news lately because of their harmful ingredients (seriously, look them up on the Think Dirty app). Instead of gifting yourself or a new mom with those dangerous conventional products, you may want to consider safe alternatives like Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier, KidScents Tender Tush, KidScents Bath Gel and Lotion, and Gentle Baby essential oil. Gentle Baby supports the skin (many moms use it daily on their stomachs with carrier oil or a natural lotion after birth). Gentle Baby can also be diffused and applied topically to mom and/or baby to help calm, relax, and promote bonding.
The most important thing to be aware of when using oils on a baby is that you will need to greatly dilute that essential oil (far more than what the label says) before applying it to their skin. Aromatherapists, reference guides, and essential oil users often have different opinions on topical dilution ratios to use. Below are some suggested ratios, which include diluting an essential oil in 10-ml (or 2 teaspoons) of carrier oil and then applying a small amount of that dilution to your baby. For even more conservative dilution ratios (as well as other very conservative safety recommendations), check out my safety and usage section. Some additional essential oil safety guidelines for babies from Young Living can be found HERE. *Note: Young Living’s KidScents line of essential oils are pre-diluted for ages 2+. The KidScents essential oils should be diluted further for use on babies or for use on children with sensitive skin.
Every new mom wants their baby to sleep at night, right?! Lavender and KidScents SleepyIze essential oil can be used to help calm your baby down before bed. Either can be applied to mom’s skin before snuggle time. Additionally, when diluted properly (as noted above), one of these can be applied to the bottom of your baby’s feet at bedtime.
Soothing a crying baby is rarely an easy task. Peace & Calming (I or II) and Stress Away are some great oils to calm baby and mamma (remember, your baby picks up on your emotions and energy). Both oils can be diffused, but if you don’t have a diffuser, a few drops of essential oil can be added to warm water and inhaled. Many moms like to massage the back of their neck with Stress Away after a hard day. You can make your own calm mamma roll-on by adding 20 drops of Stress Away to a 10-ml roller bottle with carrier oil.
Calming a baby’s tummy can be challenging at times. Ginger and KidScents TummyGize essential oil can really help. Add one or a combo of these oils to a 10-ml roller bottle using the dilution ratios above and roll on your baby’s tummy as needed.
Lavender and Melrose are great essential oils to support your baby’s skin. Try adding a drop of either essential oils to a container of natural lotion or body butter for some skin soothing and cleansing properties.
Diffusers are one of the best additions to a baby’s room. Diffusing 1-3 drops of Myrtle or KidScents SniffleEase essential oil can cleanse the air and help keep your baby healthy.
Teething can be a very challenging time for babies. Frankincense and Copaiba essential oil can help soothe a baby’s gums during this time. One to three drops of either of these vitality oils can be diluted in 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and then a small dab of that dilution can be applied to a baby’s gums (*hint, Copaiba tastes better). A more conservative approach (as some may view this as controversial) is to dilute and apply a small amount to the baby’s jaw line (instead of the gums).
I know I mentioned KidScents Tender Tush above, but this stuff is so awesome that it deserves a special shout out! Tender Tush can replace a traditional diaper balm, which may not contain the safest ingredients.
If you have kids, you know that things can get dirty, quickly and often, right?! Thieves Household Cleaner is an all-purpose cleaner that is safe to use around everyone in your family, including children and pets. To use, add 1 ounce of Thieves Household Cleaner to 30 ounces of water in a spray bottle, and clean any surface of your home. One bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner makes 14 spray bottles of ready to use cleaner (at just $1.50 each)! This stuff is safe, more affordable, and just as (if not more effective) than your store-bought cleaner. Plus it smells amazing! Another cleaning tip is to add 1-3 drops of Purification essential oil to a cotton ball and place in the bottom of the garbage can or diaper pail to help eliminate odors.

Start slow, only do what you are comfortable with, and consider consulting a professional and/or doctor if you plan to use essential oils during pregnancy or on babies and young children.
