Essential Oils for Pregnant Mamas and Babies

If you’re wondering what Young Living essential oils and oil infused products are good options for pregnant mamas and babies, this is the blog post for you! :)

Oils for Moms-To-Be and Babies Header

One of the top complaints during pregnancy is being nauseous. One of the things that can help keep this at bay is snacking regularly. Young Living’s Pure Protein Complete can be a great choice as it’s a clean and comprehensive protein supplement. It comes in two flavors, Vanilla Spice or Chocolate Deluxe. Both flavors taste super yummy in a smoothie or mixed with vanilla almond milk! Ginger Vitality essential oil can also help settle your stomach (just as ginger gum can). Try adding a drop of Ginger Vitality to a capsule with carrier oil or to a glass of water. If you don’t want to ingest it, try applying 1-2 drops of Ginger essential oil to the stomach and abdomen.

Snacking and Ginger Essential Oil for Nausea

When your baby bump starts growing, your skin can get a little itchy from stretching. Rather than using some of the other moisturizing products on the market that don’t necessarily have the best ingredients, you can make your own (for a lot less)! Below you’ll find a recipe for a DIY body butter that contains shea butter, coconut oil, almond oil, and Lavender and Frankincense essential oil (two of the top skin supporting oils).

Body Butter Recipe for Pregnancy

Another common complaint during pregnancy is trouble sleeping at night. Incorporating essential oils into your routine can help you relax before bed and promote a good nights rest. Tranquil Roll-on and Peace & Calming (I and II) are two favorites. Both can be applied topically to the wrists, back of neck, behind the ears, and/or on the bottom of the feet. Peace & Calming can also be diffused.

Essential Oils for Sleep During Pregnancy

Sometimes pregnant moms and new moms need a little mood lifter and citrus oils are some of the best ones to use. A combo of Tangerine, Grapefruit, Lemon, and Bergamot essential oil make a great diffuser blend. You may also want to make your own happy roll-on with Joy, Grapefruit, and Bergamot essential oil in a 10-ml roller bottle with carrier oil (which can be rolled onto the wrists, back of neck, behind the ears, and/or on the bottom of the feet). *Note: All of these oils are photosensitive and should be applied at night or to areas that will not be exposed when outside during the day.

Oils for Mood During Pregnancy

Staying active during pregnancy is important, but it can become difficult as the baby gets bigger. An Epsom salt bath with oils like Frankincense and Copaiba can really help ease muscle tension and relax your body. You may also want to make your own muscle roll-on with Frankincense, Copaiba, and Idaho Balsam Fir essential oil in a 10-ml roller bottle with carrier oil. Simply roll your blend on tired muscles as needed.

Essential Oils for Exercise During Pregnancy

There are a few oily products you may want to keep handy in your diaper bag. Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier, KidScents Tender Tush (use to moisturize and soothe baby’s bottom), and Thieves Spray and Thieves Wipes (use to quickly clean changing tables, shopping carts, restaurant tables and chairs, etc) are some favorites.

Essential Oils and Products for Diaper Bag

Some popular baby products (*sigh…) have been in the news lately because of their harmful ingredients (seriously, look them up on the Think Dirty app). Instead of gifting yourself or a new mom with those dangerous conventional products, you may want to consider safe alternatives like Thieves Waterless Hand Purifier, KidScents Tender Tush, KidScents Bath Gel and Lotion, and Gentle Baby essential oil. Gentle Baby supports the skin (many moms use it daily on their stomachs with carrier oil or a natural lotion after birth). Gentle Baby can also be diffused and applied topically to mom and/or baby to help calm, relax, and promote bonding.

Essential Oils for Baby Shower

The most important thing to be aware of when using oils on a baby is that you will need to greatly dilute that essential oil (far more than what the label says) before applying it to their skin. Aromatherapists, reference guides, and essential oil users often have different opinions on topical dilution ratios to use. Below are some suggested ratios, which include diluting an essential oil in 10-ml (or 2 teaspoons) of carrier oil and then applying a small amount of that dilution to your baby. For even more conservative dilution ratios (as well as other very conservative safety recommendations), check out my safety and usage section. Some additional essential oil safety guidelines for babies from Young Living can be found HERE*Note: Young Living’s KidScents line of essential oils are pre-diluted for ages 2+. The KidScents essential oils should be diluted further for use on babies or for use on children with sensitive skin.

Diluting Essential Oils on Babies and Children

Every new mom wants their baby to sleep at night, right?! :) Lavender and KidScents SleepyIze essential oil can be used to help calm your baby down before bed. Either can be applied to mom’s skin before snuggle time. Additionally, when diluted properly (as noted above), one of these can be applied to the bottom of your baby’s feet at bedtime.

Essential Oils for Babies and Sleep

Soothing a crying baby is rarely an easy task. Peace & Calming (I or II) and Stress Away are some great oils to calm baby and mamma (remember, your baby picks up on your emotions and energy). Both oils can be diffused, but if you don’t have a diffuser, a few drops of essential oil can be added to warm water and inhaled. Many moms like to massage the back of their neck with Stress Away after a hard day. You can make your own calm mamma roll-on by adding 20 drops of Stress Away to a 10-ml roller bottle with carrier oil.

Essential Oils for Crying Baby

Calming a baby’s tummy can be challenging at times. Ginger and KidScents TummyGize essential oil can really help. Add one or a combo of these oils to a 10-ml roller bottle using the dilution ratios above and roll on your baby’s tummy as needed.

Essential Oils for Baby Tummy

Lavender and Melrose are great essential oils to support your baby’s skin. Try adding a drop of either essential oils to a container of natural lotion or body butter for some skin soothing and cleansing properties.

Essential Oils for Baby Skin

Diffusers are one of the best additions to a baby’s room. Diffusing 1-3 drops of Myrtle or KidScents SniffleEase essential oil can cleanse the air and help keep your baby healthy.

Essential Oils to Cleanse the Air in Baby Room

Teething can be a very challenging time for babies. Frankincense and Copaiba essential oil can help soothe a baby’s gums during this time. One to three drops of either of these vitality oils can be diluted in 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and then a small dab of that dilution can be applied to a baby’s gums (*hint, Copaiba tastes better). A more conservative approach (as some may view this as controversial) is to dilute and apply a small amount to the baby’s jaw line (instead of the gums).

Essential Oils to Use While Teething

I know I mentioned KidScents Tender Tush above, but this stuff is so awesome that it deserves a special shout out! Tender Tush can replace a traditional diaper balm, which may not contain the safest ingredients.

Natural Diaper Balm

If you have kids, you know that things can get dirty, quickly and often, right?! Thieves Household Cleaner is an all-purpose cleaner that is safe to use around everyone in your family, including children and pets. To use, add 1 ounce of Thieves Household Cleaner to 30 ounces of water in a spray bottle, and clean any surface of your home. One bottle of Thieves Household Cleaner makes 14 spray bottles of ready to use cleaner (at just $1.50 each)! This stuff is safe, more affordable, and just as (if not more effective) than your store-bought cleaner. Plus it smells amazing! Another cleaning tip is to add 1-3 drops of Purification essential oil to a cotton ball and place in the bottom of the garbage can or diaper pail to help eliminate odors.

Safe Household Cleaner and Essential Oil for Odors

A diffuser as well as a lot of the essential oils mentioned above (Frankincense, Copaiba, Purification, Lavender, and Stress Away) come in the Premium Starter Kit. If you have this kit, you are already in a really great place to start using oils on yourself and your baby! If you don’t have your own kit, but you would like to learn more, click HERE or on the graphic below.

Essential oil usage is a personal choice. You will never find hard-and-fast rules. Aromatherapists, reference guides, and essential oil users often have different opinions on if and which essential oils are safe to use during pregnancy and on babies and young children (as well as the topical dilution ratios to use). Start slow, only do what you are comfortable with, and consider consulting a professional and/or doctor if you plan to use essential oils during pregnancy or on babies and young children.

Are Your Household and Personal Care Products Safe?

ARE YOUR HOUSEHOLD AND PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS SAFE

Thanks so much for stopping by! I want to support you on your wellness journey by teaching you why you should become more aware of the products you use on a daily basis and how you can make better choices with the help of Young Living essential oils. First, let’s start with the why. I’m going to get into some scary facts, but stay with me until the end. I promise that you’ll eventually feel empowered and ready to take control! Ready? Let’s dive in!

The scary truth…

Did you know that the number two cause of death in the United States is cancer?1 In 2017 in the U.S., there will be an estimated 1,688,780 cancer cases and 600,920 cancer deaths.2 One third of cancer cases in the U.S. are directly linked to tobacco, alcohol, poor diet, physical inactivity, weight, infections, radiation, or chemical exposure.3 Only 5-10% of all cancer cases can be blamed on genetics.4 This means that of the estimated 600,920 cancer deaths expected in 2017, as many as 570,874 of them are preventable! It comes down to how we take care of ourselves and what we allow into our homes.

In 1989, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) analyzed 2,983 chemicals in our personal care products—and found 884 of them were toxic. 778 can cause acute toxicity. 314 can cause biological mutation. 218 can cause reproductive problems. 146 can cause tumors.5 Additionally, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) identified 150 common household chemicals linked to allergies, high blood pressure, migraines, birth defects, cancer, and mental disturbances.6 While other countries around the world have banned many of these chemicals, they are still allowed in the U.S.—we’re talking about chemicals lurking in products that Americans use every single day!

The skin is the largest organ of the body. While the skin is enough of a barrier to keep fluids within our body (except for its controlled release of sweat), it readily absorbs many substances like a sponge.7,8 The average woman uses 12 products containing 168 ingredients every day.Scented soap, body wash, and facial cleanser contains DEA/TEA (a potential carcinogen), shampoo contains sodium lauryl sulfate (a skin irritant that is linked to eczema), conditioner contains phthalates (two of the phthalates used in the U.S. are banned in Europe), lotion contains parabens, phthalates, and petroleum derived mineral oil (all three of these are endocrine disruptors), feminine powder contains talc (a chemical that has been directly linked to ovarian cancer), toothpaste contains fluoride and comes in a bottle that says, “call Poison Control if swallowed,” perfume contains fragrance (which is often made up of unlisted trade secret, yet dangerous, chemicals), and deodorant contains aluminum (which scientists believe may be linked to Alzheimer’s and breast cancer). Even worse, each product often contains more than one dangerous chemical.7,8,10

The most hazardous chemicals in the home are found in air fresheners (ex: plug ins, candles, or sprays), chemical cleaning supplies, drain and oven cleaners, furniture polish, dishwasher soap, dish soap, laundry detergent, fabric softener, and fabric sheets.11 When cleaning products are used, those chemicals become part of our indoor air quality—it’s no wonder the air inside our homes is more toxic than outdoor air quality.11 Think about this—we wash our clothes in a neon colored and synthetically fragranced laundry detergent that has a long ingredient list we can hardly pronounce, it outgases in our closet all night long, and it eventually sits on our skin.12 Yikes!

The Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) of 1976 grandfathered in at least 55,000 chemicals currently on the market today.12 What does that mean to you? Simply put: these chemicals have not had any safety testing and we know very little information about their side effects.10 In June 2016, President Obama signed the Frank R. Lautenberg Chemical Safety for the 21st Century Act, which updates the TSCA and requires all existing chemicals to be evaluated for unreasonable risks to human health and the environment.14 However, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has years to complete this task, and we currently continue to be at risk.15 Toxic labeling is only required if 50% or more of the animals tested die.10,16 Additionally, while Europe abides by a “precautionary principle” that is based on the idea that harm to consumer health should not need to be established with “full scientific certainty” before corrective action is taken, the U.S. waits for ingredients in consumer products to cause harm to public health.7 To sum this up, we are our own experiment! Scary huh?!

It is expected that sometime during the 21st century, 40% of all Americans will get some form of cancer during their lifetime. In fact, in 2002, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) reported that they expect cancer rates to double by 2050. Additionally, according to a study by the World Health Organization (WHO), 80% of these cancers will be caused by environmental factors.11

What happens when your body is chemically burdened? You may see it in something as devastating as cancer. However, most of us experience it in other ways: lack of energy, poor motivation, inability to concentrate, memory difficulties, dizziness, trouble sleeping, chronic inflammation, trouble breathing, migraines, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, skin issues, stress, nervousness, among others.11,12 If you struggle with any of these issues, it’s time to make changes and kick chemicals to the curb. YOU CAN DO THIS! It’s about taking small steps and saying, “NO MORE!” You can’t control all the places you are exposed—but you are the gatekeeper of your house and you can control what you allow in your home.11

There’s a better way…

Not sure where to start? It’s OK. I’m here to help. :) This is about small, simple, baby steps. Start by looking up your household and personal care products on the EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning, EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetic Database, or the Think Dirty app (the app is my fave). Take it one month at a time and swap things out in your home. You can easily start swapping out many of your harmful products for some very simple DIY options made with essential oils or for some of the oil infused products that Young Living offers. DIYer or not, there are SAFE AND EFFECTIVE options for you!

The best way to begin…

To help you get started, Young Living offers a Premium Starter Kit and a Thieves Premium Starter Kit. The Premium Starter Kit includes an entire collection of essential oils (11 bottles, to be exact) and a diffuser. The Thieves Premium Starter Kit includes an entire collection of safe oil infused household and personal care products to help you easily kick harmful chemicals to the curb in one easy sweep (it also comes with two bottles of essential oil). Both of these kits will rock your socks off and give you a great start! Click the ‘get your own oils’ graphic below to learn more about these kits.
