Essential Oil Quick Tips – Part 2

In March, I published a blog post that contained several Essential Oil Quick Tips. My original plan was to continually add to that post, but once I got to almost 20 tips and graphics, I thought I better divide them up a little bit. Below you’ll find my Essential Oil Quick Tips Part 2! Happy learning! P.S. Many of the below oils come in your Premium Starter Kit!! :)

SUPPORT YOUR SKIN: Try adding a drop of Frankincense and/or Lavender to your daily facial moisturizer each morning and/or night to support a looking healthy complexion and work on fine lines and wrinkles.

ADD SOME FLAVOR: Looking to spruce up your water? Add some flavor with 1-2 drops of a citrus Vitality essential oil! Choose from one of these Vitality varieties – Bergamot, Grapefruit, Orange, Tangerine, Citrus Fresh, Lemon, Lime, or Jade Lemon. Yummy!!

FOR THAT TIME OF THE MONTH: Keep an eye out for Dragon Time to be back in stock! This stuff is so comforting and soothing for that time of the month! Add a 1-3 drops to your lower back and/or abdomen throughout the day. To make your bottle last longer, you can dilute it (it is just as effective when diluted). I like adding 10 drops to a 5-ml roller bottle, 20 drops to a 10-ml roller bottle, or 30 drops to a 15-ml bottle. Then fill the rest of the bottle up with carrier oil and roll on those same areas as needed.

BECAUSE LIFE IS GROSS: Thieves is one of my favorite essential oils because it’s super powerful and smells amazing! I use Thieves in a lot of my DIY recipes. I also diffuse it year round and apply it (diluted with carrier oil) to the bottom of my feet every night. During the colder months, I make tea by adding 1 drop Thieves Vitality, 1-2 drops Lemon Vitality, and honey (to taste) to warm water. I also like to add a drop of Thieves Vitality to a capsule (with carrier oil) to support my immune and respiratory system. Top 5 oils for sure!!

FOR PARENTS: ATTENTION PARENTS!! Whether you’ve been taking care of little ones all day, managing end of the day craziness with your kiddos, or running the around in the evening for after school activities, you need STRESS AWAY! Apply to the wrists, forearms, back of the neck, or behind the ears throughout the day or at night when you are winding down. You can also diffuse this blend too….it smells so good!

FOR PEOPLE WHO GET HOT: Need to cool down? Try diluting 1-3 drops of Peppermint essential oil and apply to the back of your neck. You can also make a cooling spray by adding a few drops of Peppermint oil, an optional Tablespoon of witch hazel (to help disperse the oil in the water), and water to a 2 ounce spray bottle. Shake and spritz yourself with it.

FOR MAMA & BABY: Gentle Baby is a great blend to calm both mama and baby. You can diffuse several drops, inhale it directly from the bottle, or apply topically. Applying it to your upper chest could benefit both you and your baby when you are holding your little one.

BEST ADDITIONS TO A VODKA TONIC: Happy Friday!!! One of my favorite weekend cocktails is a vodka tonic with a drop of Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon, or Lime Vitality essential oil. Trust me, you will love this!!

HATE THE SMELL OF AN OIL?: Hate the smell of an essential oil, but know you could benefit from using it? Add a little Orange to it! Seriously… THIS WORKS!! :) I do this with oils like Joy and Vetiver.

SUMMER NIGHT SKIN SOOTHER: When summer finally decides to arrive, try these summer night skin essential oils! Apply a small amount of Lavender and Purification to your ankles, wrists, pant legs, and back of the neck to help enjoy a campfire annoyance free. You can also make an easy to use skin soother roll-on by adding 10-15 drops of each oil to a 10-ml roller bottle. Fill with carrier oil, gently shake, and use to spot soothe areas of the arms, legs, and ankles after sitting outside at night. You’ll end up carrying this roll-on around with you all summer!

TREAT YOURSELF: If you ever want to treat yourself, Melissa and Rose are great essential oils to get! They are great for skin health, and are also uplifting and emotionally balancing. They can also be found in many blends such as White Angelica, Forgiveness, Joy, Envision, and Humility. Melissa is in the ART Cleanser and ART Toner, and Rose makes an awesome addition to my homemade facial serum (mix 1 ounce avocado oil, 1 drop Rose, 1-2 drops Frankincense, and 1-2 drops Myrrh in a glass dropper bottle). The Melissa plants smelled so good at the  Young Living farm in Mona, Utah!

FOR PEOPLE WHO COOK: Have you tried the Vitality essential oil line in your kitchen? My hubby adds a couple drops of Lemongrass Vitality to his Thai soup. You can also add a drop of Basil Vitality to a tomato sauce or substitute a drop of Lemon Vitality for one teaspoon of Lemon juice. The possibilities are endless!!!

FOR YOUR SKIN AND HAIR: Cedarwood is one of the most affordable essential oils. It is awesome for your skin (specifically your scalp) and promotes healthy looking hair and hair growth. You can massage Cedarwood into your scalp or add a few drops to your shampoo and conditioner. The warm, calming scent of Cedarwood also makes it a diffuser favorite for winding down at night.

D. Gary Young is Young Living’s Founder (Gary’s wife, Nancy Young, is Young Living’s newly appointed CEO). He grew up with humble beginnings in the rural town of Challis, Idaho, where he developed a profound appreciation for the power of nature. Having dedicated decades to traveling the world and researching the remarkable wellness benefits of these precious oils, Gary is one of the world’s foremost authorities on essential oils. Because of his experiences, Gary has never let up on his lifelong mission to share the highest quality essential oils in the world.

Gary Young’s personal experiences have made him who he is today, expanded his empathetic nature, and left him with a true commitment to helping those in need. After helping himself recover from adversity, Gary knew he could help others as well. That has been his life’s mission ever since: sharing his knowledge of and experience with essential oils and healthy living!

Slide05[1]

Young Living has grown from a tiny business into the world leader in essential oils. From Gary’s first introduction to essential oils in 1985, we have now expanded around the world, with farms, markets, shipping facilities, members, and offices across the globe. Here you will see a few examples of important points in Young Living’s history. Slide06[1]

I love this picture because it depicts Young Living’s global impact! Gary Young is passionate about our farms and is instrumental in overseeing our many global farms, where he directs the growth, harvest, and distillation processes of our high-quality essential oils. It is amazing to see that even with so much growth around the world, Young Living remains dedicated to their powerful mission that was mentioned earlier.

Slide10[1]

Essential oils are the aromatic liquids found within shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, resins, and seeds. Some people like to call essential oils “nature’s living energy” because they contain unique constituents that provide a host of benefits. Most essential oils are extracted from plant sources using steam distillation and are highly concentrated, making them far more potent than dried botanicals. Essential oils are volatile, which means that the scent of the oil rises quickly into the air. They are also versatile, with a wide variety of uses. Some people use essential oils to enliven an environment, support different body systems, or just for their great scents. However you choose to use essential oils, chances are someone else has tried that same use in the past. If you still don’t know where to start, rest assured that each essential oil is labeled with primary usage instructions. An essential oil reference guide will also guide you in the right direction.

Slide11[1]

Essential oils are nothing new! They have been used throughout history in many cultures for their health-supporting benefits. The Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Europeans, and Chinese have used them for centuries for health, beauty, fragrance, and spiritual practices. There are also many references to essential oils in historical texts, which signifies their importance in history.

Slide12[1]

There are three ways to use essential oils. You can use some oils aromatically, some topically, and some can even be taken internally.

Slide13[1]

One of my favorite ways to use essential oils is aromatically. Many of us have had a time where a smell triggers a memory—freshly baked bread, pine needles, or spring flowers can easily take you back to positive times in your life. Essential oils are the same! To use them aromatically:

  • Place 1-2 drops in the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, cup your hands over your nose and mouth, and inhale deeply.
  • Diffusion is another great way to use essential oils aromatically. By creating a fine aromatic mist, diffusers allow you to create a spa-like atmosphere and enjoy the benefits of essential oils in any environment. Young Living offers a wide variety of diffusers, and when you enroll as a Wholesale Member, you will receive a diffuser in your Premium Starter Kit.

Slide14[1]

Essential oils can also be applied to the skin. This is known as topical application. Topical application is a great way to support your skin because essential oils are easy to use and provide quick benefits. Essential oils can be applied to the area of the body you want to support (never in the eyes or ears). They can also be applied to the bottom of the feet, the wrists, behind the ears, and on the back of the neck.

Slide15[1]

Some people choose to use essential oils internally by adding them to water or liquid, placing them in a capsule, or taking one of Young Living’s oil-infused products. Peppermint, for example, can help promote healthy bowel function and support overall digestion when taken internally.

Slide16[1]

Of all the companies out there, why would you choose Young Living above all the others? Well, Young Living is the world leader in essential oils! We believe that your family deserves to harvest the benefits of nature’s solutions every day, without compromise. Our commitment to purity and stewardship is embodied in a unique, proprietary process we call Seed to Seal. No other company can match what Young Living does to ensure the purity and potency of the highest quality essential oils on the market.

Slide17[1]

Young Living’s commitment to quality starts with seeds. The seeds we use are selected for their ability to become botanicals with high levels of bioactive compounds. We then grow the seeds using cultivation practices that are dedicated to responsible and sustainable growing and harvesting methods. Next, we distill using a gentle, proprietary technique for steam extracting essential oils and preserving their precious constituents. To guarantee consistent, verifiable quality, our oils are tested in Young Living’s own internal labs, as well as in third-party facilities. Finally, each essential oil is carefully bottled and labeled using state-of-the-art equipment.

Slide18[1]

To ensure that Young Living is able to control every step of the Seed to Seal process, we own a number of farms and partner or co-op with many others around the world. Gary Young personally travels the globe to scout farms that offer ideal conditions for growing premium botanicals. This personal, direct involvement in the growing process is what allows us to ensure that each product delivers the purity and efficacy our members around the world expect.

Slide19[1]

Seed to Seal is not only our process of operations, but it is also our promise to your family. Through each step of our production process on both our own and our partner farms, we use the most exacting standards possible to make our products, your life, and the earth better. Only one company can make the Seed to Seal promise. Only Young Living!

Is It Safe To Ingest Essential Oils?

Is It Safe To Ingest Essential Oils

I wanted to cover somewhat of a controversial topic in this blog post —> ingesting essential oils. Because you might be asking yourself, “Is it safe to ingest essential oils?” Young Living does list dietary supplement directions on several of its essential oils. However, avid oil users tend to be quite opinionated over the issue. And to put it lightly, people on both sides tend to get pretty wound up when discussing whether it is safe or not to take essential oils as a dietary supplement. I’m going to blog on about the topic, but please…no oiling arguments in the comments please – I much prefer a positive blogosphere. :)

There are 3 models when it comes to using essential oils:

Therapeutic use of essential oils follows three different models: the English, German, and French.

  • The English model heavily dilutes a small amount of essential oil in a large amount of a carrier oil for massage.
  • The German model focuses primarily on inhalation of essential oils.
  • The French model prescribes undiluted topical application of essential oil as well as ingestion of pure, therapeutic grade essential oils (usually under the guidance of a practitioner).

Young Living subscribes to all three models of essential oil use. As a result, some Young Living essential oils are labeled as a dietary supplement. Gary Young, the founder of Young Living essential oils, has worked alongside many aromatherapy experts across the world for the past 20+ years and feels confident in embracing the internal consumption of essential oils. Some oilers don’t agree with this. However, the internal consumption of essential oils is legal per the FDA (you can easily Google the GRAS list of essential oils per the FDA to see the official list).

Do you have to ingest Young Living essential oils?

When I want to use essential oils, I always look up the body system that I want to support in a reference guide. My reference guide lists various essential oils that may be helpful and how each of those oils can be used (topically, aromatically, and/or internally). The body can usually be supported through aromatic use or topical application of essential oils. On occasion, you will notice that an oil can be taken internally for support. However, the internal consumption recommendation is usually listed alongside another recommendation that suggests aromatic and/or topical application of essential oils. This means that if the thought of taking essential oils as a dietary supplement makes you a tad nervous, you certainly don’t have to ingest them…you can pick the other option/s listed. :)

Do I feel safe ingesting essential oils?

Yes! My husband and I definitely feel safe moderately ingesting our Young Living essential oils (when they are designated for this purpose as listed on their label). My hubby and I always felt that the benefits of ingesting essential oils far outweighed any potential risk to us. So far, so good! Neither of us have experienced any adverse effects from taking our oils as a dietary supplement. We have only seen great benefit!

How often do I ingest essential oils?

Most of the time, my hubby and I use our oils aromatically and topically. However, there are a few things that we prefer to address through moderate (0-3 total drops per day) internal consumption of our Young Living essential oils. We like to use a drop of Peppermint in our water for digestive support. We also like to take a drop of Thieves in a capsule for immune support. On occasion, I will add a drop of essential oil to water, tea, or a smoothie.

Should you ingest your Young Living essential oils?

Young Living is a leader in the aromatherapy world. Know that much research, experience, and knowledge has gone into the dietary supplement usage instructions listed on the back of each Young Living essential oil bottle. Additionally, Young Living’s Seed to Seal promise guarantees that you are provided with a chemical free, pure, therapeutic grade essential oil. However, also know that I am NOT here to tell you whether you should ingest your Young Living essential oils. I’m not an expert. I am simply an avid essential oil user who feels confident and safe using my essential oils and embracing Young Living’s oiling philosophy. I personally feel 100% a-ok ingesting my Young Living essential oils. However, I encourage you to do your own research and pick the option that best suites your needs and comfort level. There are many people who ingest their oils, but there are also many people who do not. If you decide it’s not for you, know that you can experience great benefit from aromatic and topical essential oil use! You can make it just fine in the oiling world without ingesting your oils. A Young Living essential oils distributor should NEVER twist your arm into ingesting oils. Ingesting essential oils is a personal choice and something you should feel comfortable with if you decide to do it.

Some helpful tips if you decide ingesting essential oils is for you:

  • Always check the back of your essential oil bottle to be sure that your essential oil can be taken as a dietary supplement.
  • Essential oils can be taken as a dietary supplement by putting them in a clear vegetable capsule with a carrier oil (and taking it just as you would any other pill), in a spoonful of honey or agave nectar, or by adding them to yogurt, juice, milk, tea, or water. I enjoy certain oils in tea and water, while others, like Oregano, taste terrible and I much prefer to take via capsule. When adding essential oils to a drink, it is recommended to use a glass cup (because essential oils will dissolve the petrochemicals found in less durable plastic). Consuming essential oils in a drink may irritate the lips and/or mucus membranes of some people (because essential oils are oil soluble, not water soluble) – just something to keep an eye on and be mindful of.
  • Discontinue ingestion of essential oils if you experience any unwanted side effects.
  • Expect to get the oil burps shortly after you ingest an essential oil lol! They are short lived and for me, a small price to pay. :)
  • Once you know that your essential oil can be taken internally, refer to the dietary dosage recommendations on the back of each essential oil bottle. Know that increasing the recommended dosage is at your own risk. You’ll see many graphics and blog posts listing recipes that exceed the recommended dosage. Please keep in mind that these are from people who have tailored their oiling regimen to fit what they feel meets their needs and are not always appropriate for the general public. These graphics and blog posts are for educational purposes (to spark further research on your part) and should never be a substitute for a research based reference guide or a consult with a professional.
  • The “Essential Oils Desk Reference” recommends that you consult a professional if you plan to consume essential oils on a regular basis (continuously, for more than a few days).
  • Because babies and young children are so small and essential oils are so potent, ingestion of essential oils is typically not recommended for them.
  • I feel confident when using my oils and I feel like I have made the right decision for MY  heath, but as stated, I am not an expert. Therefore, please consult a professional as needed or when in doubt over oiling safety and appropriateness. You are in charge of your own health and it is your job to assess the risks and benefits. Happy oiling!

Benefits of Diffusing Essential Oils

WHY SHOULD YOU DIFFUSE ESSENTIAL OILS

What do you think of when you hear the word aromatherapy? Lighting a nice scented candle? Adding essential oils to a wax warmer? Using an air freshener? Either way, I bet you think of filling a room with a nice fragrance, right? Well, this isn’t actually true aromatherapy…it’s more like fragrancing. If you are using air fresheners (blagh!), perfume grade essential oils (blagh!), or candles (blagh!) it can actually be toxic fragrancing. True aromatherapy is so much more than just a nice scent. True aromatherapy can have profound effects on our health and well-being, body, mind, and emotions. To experience the many benefits of true aromatherapy, you need to use high-quality essential oils (like Young Living essential oils). You also need to disperse the essential oils into the air using an ultrasonic or cold air diffuser (as heating essential oils destroys the oils’ therapeutic properties).

*To clarify: You can use essentials oils in a wax warmer. However, please use a good quality essential oil versus a perfume grade essential oil. FYI… Heating essential oils will only make your home smell nice. Because heat destroys the therapeutic properties of essential oils, you won’t get any health benefits from putting essential oils into a wax warmer. However, diffusing essential oils will fill your home with an amazing scent and allow you to experience the true health benefits of aromatherapy. :)

Benefits of diffusing essential oils:

As stated above, diffusing essential oils can offer an abundance of health benefits. The benefits seem endless, but I summarized some of them below.

  • promotes a restful nights sleep
  • improves concentration and focus
  • stimulates secretion of endorphins
  • improves concentration, alertness, mental clarity, and focus
  • invigorates and energizes
  • freshens the air and neutralizes odors
  • deepens your spiritual connection
  • creates a spa like atmosphere
  • balances emotions and uplifts mood
  • supports the immune system
  • supports the respiratory system
  • soothes nerves and relieves occasional tension
  • and so much more!

My favorite essential oil diffuser:

Young Living offers many high quality essential oil diffusers. I diffuse my essential oils using the Young Living Home Diffuser (because this diffuser rocks and also because it came in the Premium Starter Kit). The Home Diffuser is a cold air diffuser. It combines a humidifier, air purifier, atomizer, and aromatherapy diffuser into one product that safely releases essential oils into the air. The Home Diffuser breaks the essential oils and water into millions of micro-particles, disperses them into the air, and activates the powerful plant constituents found in Young Living essential oils. The fine mist that comes out of the diffuser will actually sit in the air for hours, providing therapeutic benefits long after your diffuser has finished running!

How to use the Young Living Home Diffuser:

The Home Diffuser contains a water reservoir, which holds about 1/2 cup of water. Open the water reservoir by lifting the lid. Fill the reservoir to the fill line with room temperature distilled or purified water (distilled is preferred). Then add about 5-8 drops (adjust per your preference) of your favorite Young Living essential oil to the water (we usually use 5-6 drops). Replace the lid. Turn the diffuser on by pressing the button on the front of the diffuser (green light). Press the button again to put diffuser on the alternating 30 second on/off setting (red light). To turn the diffuser off, press the button a third time. To turn the ambient light off while running, simply press and hold the button for about 2 seconds until the LED light turns off. The diffuser will shut off automatically when out of water.

How often and how long should you diffuse essential oils?

I personally find it helpful to diffuse essential oils on a daily basis. My hubby and I usually run our diffuser until it runs out of water and it shuts off on its own. However, diffusing essential oils for even just 10 minutes, 3 times per day will support your health.

How do you know which essential oil you should diffuse for specific support?

Each essential oil offers its own set of benefits. You’ll definitely want to obtain a reference guide when you start using essential oils. A reference guide will tell you which oil to use for relaxing, energizing, etc. Here are a couple of places where you can buy reference guides.
