Essential Oil Quick Tips – Part 2

In March, I published a blog post that contained several Essential Oil Quick Tips. My original plan was to continually add to that post, but once I got to almost 20 tips and graphics, I thought I better divide them up a little bit. Below you’ll find my Essential Oil Quick Tips Part 2! I hope to publish one Essential Oil Quick Tip blog post a month. Happy learning! P.S. Many of the below oils come in your Premium Starter Kit!! :)

SUPPORT YOUR SKIN: Try adding a drop of Frankincense and/or Lavender to your daily facial moisturizer each morning and/or night to support a looking healthy complexion and work on fine lines and wrinkles.

ADD SOME FLAVOR: Looking to spruce up your water? Add some flavor with 1-2 drops of a citrus Vitality essential oil! Choose from one of these Vitality varieties – Bergamot, Grapefruit, Orange, Tangerine, Citrus Fresh, Lemon, Lime, or Jade Lemon. Yummy!!

FOR THAT TIME OF THE MONTH: Keep an eye out for Dragon Time to be back in stock! This stuff is so comforting and soothing for that time of the month! Add a 1-3 drops to your lower back and/or abdomen throughout the day. To make your bottle last longer, you can dilute it (it is just as effective when diluted). I like adding 10 drops to a 5-ml roller bottle, 20 drops to a 10-ml roller bottle, or 30 drops to a 15-ml bottle. Then fill the rest of the bottle up with carrier oil and roll on those same areas as needed.

BECAUSE LIFE IS GROSS: Thieves is one of my favorite essential oils because it’s super powerful and smells amazing! I use Thieves in a lot of my DIY recipes. I also diffuse it year round and apply it (diluted with carrier oil) to the bottom of my feet every night. During the colder months, I make tea by adding 1 drop Thieves Vitality, 1-2 drops Lemon Vitality, and honey (to taste) to warm water. I also like to add a drop of Thieves Vitality to a capsule (with carrier oil) to support my immune and respiratory system. Top 5 oils for sure!!

FOR PARENTS: ATTENTION PARENTS!! Whether you’ve been taking care of little ones all day, managing end of the day craziness with your kiddos, or running the around in the evening for after school activities, you need STRESS AWAY! Apply to the wrists, forearms, back of the neck, or behind the ears throughout the day or at night when you are winding down. You can also diffuse this blend too….it smells so good!

FOR PEOPLE WHO GET HOT: Need to cool down? Try diluting 1-3 drops of Peppermint essential oil and apply to the back of your neck. You can also make a cooling spray by adding a few drops of Peppermint oil, an optional Tablespoon of witch hazel (to help disperse the oil in the water), and water to a 2 ounce spray bottle. Shake and spritz yourself with it.

FOR MAMA & BABY: Gentle Baby is a great blend to calm both mama and baby. You can diffuse several drops, inhale it directly from the bottle, or apply topically. Applying it to your upper chest could benefit both you and your baby when you are holding your little one.

BEST ADDITIONS TO A VODKA TONIC: Happy Friday!!! One of my favorite weekend cocktails is a vodka tonic with a drop of Grapefruit, Orange, Lemon, or Lime Vitality essential oil. Trust me, you will love this!!

HATE THE SMELL OF AN OIL?: Hate the smell of an essential oil, but know you could benefit from using it? Add a little Orange to it! Seriously… THIS WORKS!! :) I do this with oils like Joy and Vetiver.

SUMMER NIGHT SKIN SOOTHER: When summer finally decides to arrive, try these summer night skin essential oils! Apply a small amount of Lavender and Purification to your ankles, wrists, pant legs, and back of the neck to help enjoy a campfire annoyance free. You can also make an easy to use skin soother roll-on by adding 10-15 drops of each oil to a 10-ml roller bottle. Fill with carrier oil, gently shake, and use to spot soothe areas of the arms, legs, and ankles after sitting outside at night. You’ll end up carrying this roll-on around with you all summer!

TREAT YOURSELF: If you ever want to treat yourself, Melissa and Rose are great essential oils to get! They are great for skin health, and are also uplifting and emotionally balancing. They can also be found in many blends such as White Angelica, Forgiveness, Joy, Envision, and Humility. Melissa is in the ART Cleanser and ART Toner, and Rose makes an awesome addition to my homemade facial serum (mix 1 ounce avocado oil, 1 drop Rose, 1-2 drops Frankincense, and 1-2 drops Myrrh in a glass dropper bottle). The Melissa plants smelled so good at the  Young Living farm in Mona, Utah!

FOR PEOPLE WHO COOK: Have you tried the Vitality essential oil line in your kitchen? My hubby adds a couple drops of Lemongrass Vitality to his Thai soup. You can also add a drop of Basil Vitality to a tomato sauce or substitute a drop of Lemon Vitality for one teaspoon of Lemon juice. The possibilities are endless!!!

FOR YOUR SKIN AND HAIR: Cedarwood is one of the most affordable essential oils. It is awesome for your skin (specifically your scalp) and promotes healthy looking hair and hair growth. You can massage Cedarwood into your scalp or add a few drops to your shampoo and conditioner. The warm, calming scent of Cedarwood also makes it a diffuser favorite for winding down at night.

Young Living Essential Oil Quick Tips

In February 2016, my sponsor, Angie, and I began designing a bunch of Oil Moxie branded graphics so that our team can share their love of essential oils with the world and remain compliant with the FDA. I brainstorm the catchy phrases, while Angie designs the sleek looking graphics. Don’t you just love these?! Check back here often for more Essential Oil Quick Tips because as we roll more oily graphics out, I will add them to this post.

Wake ME UP: I like diffusing this oily combo (3 drops each) in the morning because it helps wake me up. I also like to add a drop of Lemon and a drop of Peppermint to my diffuser necklace! :)

Wake-Me-Up

GET RID OF stinky smells: Purification is my go to oil for getting rid of stinky smells! Sometimes I diffuse it, while other times I add a few drops to a small spray bottle with water (you can also add a sprinkle of Epsom salt to the spray bottle to help the oil disperse evenly in the water). Then I shake and spray wherever or on whatever stinks. Think bathroom, feet, shoes, furniture, garbage can, laundry, your arm pits (haha!), etc. :)  I also add a couple drops to the vacuum filter when I clean.

Get-Rid-of-Stinky-Smells

Goodnight SLEEP TIGHT: I like diffusing these two oils (3 drops each) -OR- adding 4-8 drops Lavender and 6-12 drops Stress Away to a 10-ml roller bottle. Then I fill the rest of the bottle up with carrier oil and roll on the wrists, behind the ears, on the back of the neck, and/or on the bottom of the feet before crawling into bed.

Goodnight-Sleep-Tight

Happy Momma BLEND: We at Oil Moxie call this the “Happy Momma” blend, but maybe we should have nicknamed it the “Happy People” blend! I like to diffuse these two oils (2 drops Joy, 4 drops Orange) or make a roll-on with them (10 ml roller bottle + 5-10 drops Joy + 7-14 drops Orange + fill the remainder of the bottle with carrier oil). I roll this on the wrists, back of the neck, behind the ears, and/or over the heart. *Joy and Orange are photosensitive – be careful if applying this combo to areas of the skin that may be exposed to direct sunlight.

Happy-Momma-Blend

Study TIME: I diffuse these two oils (3 drops Orange, 2-3 drops Peppermint) quite often. I LOVE this combo because it helps promote focus and it smells awesome!! You can also make a roll-on by adding 5-10 drops of each oil to a 10-ml roller bottle. Top with carrier oil and apply to the wrists, back of neck, or on palms (cup over nose and inhale). Orange is photosensitive – be careful if applying this combo to areas of the skin that may be exposed to direct sunlight.

Study-Time

SUPPORT THAT respiratory system: I love using Thieves Vitality for respiratory support and to support healthy immune function during the winter! I add 1-2 drops to an empty capsule, add 4+ drops of liquid coconut oil, and take it as a dietary supplement. I also like to make tea by adding a drop of Thieves Vitality, a drop of Lemon Vitality, and honey (to taste) to a mug of warm water. My team member says she loves adding a drop of Thieves Vitality to warm apple cider or apple juice – I haven’t tried this, but it sounds super yummy! :)

Support-that-Respiratory-System

Keep calm AND CARRY ON: Peace & Calming (or the reformulated Peace & Calming II) is a great oil for people and pets (think car rides, fourth of July, etc). I like to diffuse this oil and apply it topically. I keep a diluted roller of Peace & Calming or Peace & Calming II around the house (10-20 drops in a 10-ml roller bottle + top with carrier oil) because it’s easy to apply to myself and the pups. I swipe the roller behind my ears, on the back of my neck, and on my wrists. Then I swipe my wrist across the back of each dog so they also keep calm. :) Peace & Calming and Peace & Calming II is photosensitive – be careful if applying either of these oils to areas of the skin that may be exposed to direct sunlight.

Keep-Calm-and-Carry-On

Pre-workout: Pre-workout oily awesomeness!! I like to add 10-20 drops of RC to a 10-ml roller bottle and fill the rest of the bottle with carrier oil. I roll that stuff right on my chest, throat, and sinuses and take a deep breath. I feel amazing during a workout when I use this!

Pre-Workout

Post-workout: Post-workout oils!! Sometimes, I put a little puddle of carrier oil in my hand with 1-2 drops of PanAway and 1-2 drops of Peppermint. Then, I apply that mixture to my muscles after a workout. Sometimes, I like to make an on-the-go roll-on by adding 15 drops Peppermint and 5 drops PanAway (for more intense relief, I add 9 more drops Peppermint and 3 more drops PanAway) to a 10-ml roller bottle and top with carrier oil. Then I roll it on my muscles, forehead, temples, and/or back of the neck.

Post-Workout

Stressed AND ON A DEADLINE: Best at school and at work diffuser combo (3 drops each) EVER!!! Oh my gosh….the combo of Peppermint and Stress Away SMELLS SOOOOO GOOD!!!! Peppermint promotes focus, while Stress Away promotes relaxation! :)

Stressed-and-On-a-Deadline

BEST breath freshener EVER: I use Peppermint Vitality to freshen my breath after my morning coffee. :) If I am feeling brave, I add a drop of Peppermint Vitality directly to my tongue. Most of the time, however, I add a drop to a glass of water and sip away. My newly discovered way to freshen my breath is to make a fresh breath spray by adding 1-3 drops Peppermint Vitality to a 4-ml spray vial filled with water.

Best-Breath-Freshener-Ever-blank

FOR YOUR WOOL dryer balls: Laundry day essentials! Have you made the switch to wool dryer balls, yet? They soften your clothes naturally, reduce drying times, and prevent static and wrinkles. They also eliminate toxic chemicals from being deposited on your clothes and body from dryer sheets and fabric softeners. Add 2-4 drops of Lavender, Purification, or your favorite essential oil to your dryer balls and scent your clothes naturally. This is a super easy change to reduce toxins in your home!

Wool-Dryer-Balls-blank

For people WHO EAT: Peppermint Vitality and DiGize Vitality are my go-to oils after I eat! I LOVE LOVE LOVE Peppermint Vitality, but if I need a little more digestive support, I grab the DiGize Vitality. To naturally support my digestive system, I like to add 1-2 drops of Peppermint Vitality to a glass of water and sip away after a meal. If I’m in a rush or I don’t want to taste the essential oil (DiGize Vitality doesn’t taste all that great), I add 1-2 drops of one (or both) of these essential oils to a clear vegetable capsule, fill the remainder of the capsule with carrier oil, and swallow it (just like a pill). :)

For-People-Who-Eat-blank

TAX TIME necessities: If you haven’t done your taxes yet, here is an oily combo for you! Apply Abundance before starting your taxes for some good vibes. While doing your taxes, apply Acceptance (just in case your refund is lower than you expected or worse, you have to pay in). When finished with your taxes, apply Joy (either in celebration or to uplift your mood).

Tax-Time-Necessities-blank

LIQUID courage: Apply Valor or Valor II to your wrists, chest, base of neck, or bottoms of feet to feel calm and empowered. You can also add it to a diffuser necklace or put a drop in the palm of your hands, cup your hands over your nose and mouth, and huff it haha! And let’s not forget that it smells absolutely amazing in the diffuser with Orange. Valor tends to go out of stock from time to time due to seasonality of one of the oils, so Young Living created Valor II, which can be used in its place.

Liquid-Courage-blank

USE frequently AROUND A DEBBIE DOWNER: Working with people who have a case of the Mondays EVERYDAY?! Use White Angelica to help keep the negative away! Diffuse several drops, use it in a diffuser necklace, or rub a few drops on the shoulders, back of neck, behind the ears, or wrists. This oil can help promote feelings of protection and security.

Use-Frequently-Around-a-Debbie-Downer-blank

EMBRACE love: Here’s a little oily blend for self love and confidence. :) Add 3-4 drops Lavender, 3-4 drops Patchouli, 3-4 drops Ylang Ylang, and an optional drop of Geranium to a 10-ml roller bottle. Fill the rest of the bottle with carrier oil. Apply to the back of the neck and over the heart. Then kick the negative self talk to the curb and say the affirmation, “I accept myself for who I am.” You can also diffuse a combo of these oils as well.

Embrace-Love-blank

RESTORE harmony: This is one of my favorite oily combos to restore harmony. The combo of these oils smells so AMAZING too!! To make a “harmony” roller, add 4 drops Patchouli, 4 drops Orange, 4 drops Sandalwood, and 1 drop Lemon to a 10-ml roller bottle. Then fill with carrier oil. Apply to wrists, back of neck, behind the ears, or on palms (cup and inhale). I also like diffusing a combo of these oils as well for some good vibes. *Lemon and Orange are photosensitive.

Restore-Harmony-blank

WINTER Wellness Tea: A little “Winter Wellness Tea” can support a healthy immune and respiratory system all year round. After all, consistency is the key when it comes to using oils! Add a drop of Thieves Vitality, a drop or Lemon Vitality, and honey (to taste) to a mug of warm water. Gently stir and sip. Or you can add a drop of each to a capsule, fill with carrier oil and swallow with water. Stay healthy people!

Learning How to Use Essential Oils Does Not Have to be Overwhelming

Learning How to Use Essential Oils Does Not Have to be Overwhelming

It seems like for as many people who use essential oils, there are just as many people who are overwhelmed by them. Despite how overwhelmed you may feel when it comes to using essential oils, I’m here to tell you that you no longer have to feel this way! If you read below, I think you’ll find my super simple oily rundown helpful. After all…life is busy and essential oils should make your life better, NOT more complicated! :) Here are the things you NEED to know when it comes to using your oils…

*Note: These tips are meant for healthy adults (there are different guidelines for children). If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or have a medical condition, please speak with your healthcare provider and check a reference guide before using essential oils.

# 1) Young Living essential oils can be used in three ways: aromatically, topically, or taken as a dietary supplement.

  • To use an essential oil aromatically: Inhale directly from the bottle; add a drop to the palm of your hand, rub your hands together, cup your hands over your nose and mouth, and inhale; add a few drops to a cotton ball and place near you; or diffuse (add 3-8 drops to a diffuser).
  • To use an essential oil topically: Apply 1-3 drops to the desired area of the skin (never in the eyes or ears). The wrists, back of the neck, and/or bottom of the feet are always great places to apply essential oils. Most essential oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil (ex: V-6 or olive oil) before applying them to the skin.
  • To take an essential oil as a dietary supplement: Add 1-2 drops to a capsule, herbal tea, water, juice, honey, or yogurt. Be sure to use a glass (not plastic) cup when adding essential oils to a beverage.

# 2) Each bottle of essential oil has a label on it. The label will tell you how to use that oil.

  • For example, the label on the bottle of RC reads, “Topical: Dilute 1 drop with 1 drop of V-6 or olive oil and apply to desired area. Aromatic: Diffuse up to 30 minutes 3 times daily.”
    • If you don’t know where to apply the oil,  apply it to the wrists, back of the neck, and/or bottom of the feet as stated above in # 1.
    • If you don’t have a diffuser, use the oil aromatically in any of the ways listed above in # 1.
  • For example, the label on the bottle of Peppermint reads, “Dietary: Take 2 drops in a capsule. Take 3 times daily or as needed.”
    • If you don’t have capsules, you can take an oil as a supplement in any of the ways listed above in # 1.

# 3) Despite what you may think, you DO NOT need to know how a particular oil benefits you before you use it!

People tend to think that they need to know how a particular essential oil will benefit them before they use it. Although, it’s nice to know details about each oil, all you really need to know is that you will always benefit when you use an essential oil! The most important thing is not always knowing how a particular oil will benefit you. Rather, the most important thing is that you use them!

# 4) What to do when you get your Premium Starter Kit:

The Premium Starter kit is a very versatile and well-rounded essential oil collection. Therefore, you can benefit from doing the following with your kit…

  1. Open all of the bottles in the Premium Starter Kit and smell them.
  2. Pick the oil that you are drawn to in that moment.
  3. Use that oil by following the directions on the bottle.
  4. Use at least one oil every morning and at least one oil every night.
  5. Be sure to eventually work your way through each of the 11 oils in the Premium Starter Kit. Try using all of the oils even if you don’t like how they smell at first – they will grow on you. Sometimes, the oil that smells the worst, is the one you need the most.
  6. As you use the oils and as you have the time, learn more about each oil by reading the info that came with your kit, visiting: www.youngliving.com, browsing the Young Living Product Guide, and/or reading a reference guide.
  7. Over time, you’ll come to find which oils you really like and which ones seem to benefit you the most!

Young Living Essential Oils for the Shower

Essential Oils for the Shower

One of the easiest ways to experience the aromatic benefits of Young Living essential oils and quickly incorporate them into your daily routine is to add a few drops of an essential oil to the back of the shower floor. The steam and heat from the shower assists with inhalation of the oils. You’ll never shower without essential oils again! :) Sometimes, I’ll randomly grab an essential oil to drop onto the shower floor. Other times, I’ll use an oil for specific support. Eucalyptus is one of my favs because it smells so invigorating! Go ahead try it!

How to Make an Essential Oil Bar – For Targeted Relief and Support

ESSENTIAL OILS BAR FOR TARGETED RELIEF AND SUPPORT

I wrote a blog post last week titled “Mess Free Essential Oil Application: How to Make a Carrier Oil Bar.” In it, I provided a recipe to make your own carrier oil bar so that you can quickly, easily, and neatly dilute any essential oil for topical application. After publishing that post, I got to thinking that it might be useful to add a therapeutic dose of your most frequently used essential oil/s to the ingredients. Doing so would create a pre-diluted, ready to use essential oil bar that you could simply uncap and rub onto the skin for targeted support. A fun, yet simple twist to my original recipe!

The possibilities are endless, but here are a few ideas to get you thinking about your essential oil bar:

  • Respiratory support bar —> Eucalyptus essential oil bar to rub on the chest and throat to support proper respiratory function.
  • Immune support bar —> Immupower essential oil bar to rub on the bottom of the feet to support the immune system.
  • Sleep tight bar —> Lavender and/or Cedarwood essential oil bar to rub on the bottom of the feet to promote a restful nights sleep.

How much essential oil do you need for an essential oil bar?

The Quick Reference Guide for Using Essential Oils recommends that when creating an essential oil blend, to add about 28 drops of essential oil to about 1/2 ounce (or 1 Tablespoon) of carrier oil.

I start with the 28 drops and adjust depending on that particular essential oil, the strength I want my bar to be, and the surface area I’ll be covering with my bar.

How much essential oil do you need to make an essential oil bar for a baby or child?

That Quick Reference Guide for Using Essential Oils suggests that essential oils be diluted further for use on babies and small children. The guide suggests:

  • Dilute 1-2 drops essential oil in 1/2-1 teaspoon carrier oil (or 3-6 drops essential oil 1/2-1 Tablespoon carrier oil).

Obviously, you can always adjust based on what seems to work for your family…these suggestions simply provide a great starting point.

Here’s how to make you own essential oil bar:

Step 1:

Fill a small saucepan with a small amount of water. Place a small mason jar (I use a 4 ounce jar) into the water (the water should come up to the halfway point on the outside of the mason jar). Turn the burner on a medium-low setting.

Step 2:

Add the below ingredients to the mason jar. Allow the ingredients to melt, stirring frequently. Remember, the beeswax pellets take some time to melt.

To make a therapeutic essential oil bar for ADULTS:

  • 3/4 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon shea butter
  • 3/4 teaspoon beeswax pellets
  • a few drops of vitamin E oil (optional)

There is much more essential oil in an essential oil bar for adults (which takes up more space in the container I use). This is why the amounts of the coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax pellets are slightly less than those listed for babies and small children (so I don’t overflow my container).

To make a therapeutic essential oil bar for BABIES/CHILDREN:

  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon shea butter
  • 1 teaspoon beeswax pellets
  • a few drops of vitamin E oil (optional)

Step 3:

Once melted, remove from heat, add your essential oils (amounts below), mix, and carefully pour the mixture into a 0.35 ounce travel deodorant container (I bought mine from Abundant Health). Let sit until your essential oil bar hardens. Don’t you just love this?! Use as needed to provide relief!

For a therapeutic essential oil bar for ADULTS:

  • add 28 drops of essential oil

To make a therapeutic essential oil bar for BABIES/CHILDREN:

  • add 3-6 drops of essential oil

Mess Free Essential Oil Application: How to Make a Carrier Oil Bar

Try This Essential Oil Carrier Oil Bar and Lotion Bar

Many essential oils need to be diluted with a carrier oil before topically applying them to the skin (psst…the back of the essential oil bottle will tell you whether your oil needs to be diluted). It’s never difficult to put a few drops of carrier oil and a drop of essential oil in the palm of my hand and apply that mixture to my skin for relief. However, when I am in a rush or in a public place, that process can be a little inconvenient and messy. That’s where my carrier oil bar comes in! A carrier oil bar makes allows for mess free essential oil application! To use, I rub the carrier oil bar over the area that I want to apply my essential oil to. Then, I massage the essential oil to that same area. If the essential oil feels too strong, I simply apply a little more of the carrier oil bar to my skin. So convenient! Better yet…this bar also doubles as a lotion since it is made of ingredients with moisturizing properties.

Here’s how I made my carrier oil bar:

Step 1: Fill a small saucepan with a small amount of water. Place a small mason jar (I use a 4 ounce jar) into the water (the water should come up to the halfway point on the outside of the mason jar). Turn the burner on a medium-low setting.

Step 1 Carrier Oil Bar

Step 2: Add the following to the mason jar (don’t over scoop your measurements or it won’t all fit):

  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil (or 1 teaspoon + 1/8 teaspoon for a slightly softer bar, which I prefer)
  • 1 teaspoon shea butter (or 1 teaspoon + 1/8 teaspoon for a slightly softer bar, which I prefer)
  • 3/4 teaspoon beeswax pellets (or 1/2 teaspoon for a slightly softer bar, which I prefer)
  • roughly 2-3 drops of vitamin E oil (optional)

Allow the ingredients to melt, stirring occasionally. Be patient – the beeswax pellets take some time to melt.

Step 2 Carrier Oil Bar

Step 3: Once melted, carefully pour the mixture into a 0.35 ounce travel deodorant container (I bought mine here). Let sit until your carrier oil bar hardens. Ta-da! This bar is super cute, convenient, and small enough to carry in your purse. :)

*If you want to use this as a lightly scented lotion bar (instead of a carrier oil bar), add about 3-8 drops of your favorite essential oil (adjust to your liking) to the melted mixture just before pouring.

Step 3 Carrier Oil Bar

How to Dilute Essential Oils Using Recycled Bottles

Tips for Pre-Diluting Your YLEO

You can also check a reference guide for essential oil dilution instructions.

I wrote a blog post the other day titled “How to Reuse Your Empty Young Living Essential Oil Bottles.” If you read it, you will know that empty essential oil bottles are perfect for pre-diluting your essential oils. Having your Young Living essential oils already diluted, allows for quick and easy oil application of your favorite essential oils (especially if you are on-the-go). To piggy back off of my “How to Reuse Your Empty Young Living Essential Oil Bottles” blog post, this one will teach you how to dilute essential oils using those recycled bottles.

Tip # 1) Check the back of each Young Living essential oil bottle – or – your reference guide

There is a label on the back of each Young Living essential oil bottle. If that essential oil is primarily used topically, the label will tell you whether that essential oil should be diluted with a carrier oil before applying it to the skin. You can also check your reference guide for dilution instructions. Young Living essential oils typically require no dilution, a 1:1 dilution (1 drop of essential oil in at least 1 drop of carrier oil), or a 1:4 dilution (1 drop of essential oil in at least 4 drops of carrier oil).

Tip # 2) Store a small amount of carrier oil in a glass dropper bottle

My favorite carrier oil is Young Living’s V-6 oil (other carrier oils like olive oil can also be used). I keep a small amount of V-6 oil in a 2 ounce glass dropper bottle to assure my ratios are accurate when I am pre-diluting my essential oils. If you don’t have a glass dropper bottle, however, no worries…I have tips below for you too.

Tip # 3) How to pre-dilute Young Living essential oils in recycled 5-ml bottles (holds about 80 drops)

-For an essential oil that is to be diluted 1:1 (1 drop of essential oil to at least 1 drop of carrier oil):

  • To fill the whole 5-ml bottle, add 40 drops of essential oil and 40 drops of carrier oil (or add 40 drops of essential oil and fill the rest of the bottle up with carrier oil)
  • To fill half of the 5-ml bottle, add 20 drops of essential oil and 20 drops of carrier oil (or add 20 drops of essential oil and add carrier oil until the bottle is half full)

-For an essential oil that is to be diluted 1:4 (1 drop of essential oil to at least 4 drops of carrier oil):

  • To fill the whole 5-ml bottle, add 16 drops of essential oil and 64 drops of carrier oil (or add 16 drops of essential oil and fill the rest of the bottle up with carrier oil)
  • To fill half of the 5-ml bottle, add 8 drops of essential oil and 32 drops of carrier oil (or add 8 drops of essential oil and add carrier oil until the bottle is half full)

Because essential oils differ in consistency, these measurements are approximate. Therefore, be sure to pay attention as you fill your bottles. You don’t want it to overflow!

Tip # 4) How to pre-dilute Young Living essential oils in recycled 15-ml bottles (holds about 250 drops)

-For an essential oil that is to be diluted 1:1 (1 drop of essential oil to at least 1 drop of carrier oil):

  • To fill the whole 15-ml bottle, add 125 drops of essential oil and 125 drops of carrier oil (or add 125 drops of essential oil and fill the rest of the bottle up with carrier oil)
  • To fill half of the 15-ml bottle, add 63 drops of essential oil and 63 drops of carrier oil (or add 63 drops of essential oil and add carrier oil until the bottle is half full)

-For an essential oil that is to be diluted 1:4 (1 drop of essential oil to at least 4 drops of carrier oil):

  • To fill the whole 15-ml bottle, add 50 drops of essential oil and 200 drops of carrier oil (or add 50 drops of essential oil and fill the rest of the bottle up with carrier oil)
  • To fill half of the 15-ml bottle, add 25 drops of essential oil and 100 drops of carrier oil (or add 25 drops of essential oil and add carrier oil until the bottle is half full)

Because essential oils differ in consistency, these measurements are approximate. Therefore, be sure to pay attention as you fill your bottles. You don’t want it to overflow!

Tip # 5) How to pre-dilute Young Living essential oils for infants and small children in recycled bottles

-Essential oils are typically diluted much more for use infants and young children. According to the Reference Guide for Essential Oils, 1-2 drops of essential oil is diluted in at least 1/2-1 teaspoon of carrier oil. A small amount of the diluted mixture is then applied to the skin.

  • a 5-ml bottle holds about 1 teaspoon
  • a 15-ml bottle holds about 3 teaspoons or 1 Tablespoon

Because essential oils differ in consistency, these measurements are approximate. Therefore, be sure to pay attention as you fill your bottles. You don’t want it to overflow!

Tip # 6) Use Young Living AromaGlide Roller Fitments

Make topical application with your essential oils easier yet by using Young Living’s AromaGlide Roller Fitments (aka: roller-balls). The fitments come 10 per pack and fit on a 5-ml and 15-ml Young Living essential oil bottle. I love Young Living’s roller-ball fitments! When I want to use my pre-diluted essential oil, I just give my bottle a quick shake, unscrew the cap, and roll it right on my skin. Seriously…it doesn’t get any easier than that! :)
