How to Use Essential Oils

Essential oils are the aromatic liquids found within shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, resins, seeds, etc. These oils, also known as nature’s living energy, contain unique constituents that provide therapeutic benefits. Wondering how to use essential oils? Follow the guide below – along with the individual instructions on each label – to experience the amazing, health supporting benefits of essential oils. Please also read the information on my “Essential Oil Safety and Usage Guidelines” page.

Inhalation

Inhaling certain essential oils heightens the senses and can have many positive effects on the body. Try these ideas to use essential oils for inhalation:

  • Inhale directly from the bottle.
  • Diffuse with any of Young Living’s diffusers (the Premium Starter Kit includes a diffuser).
  • Carefully pour hot water into a bowl and add a few drops of essential oil. Cover your head and bowl in a tent-like fashion with a towel. Breathe deeply and slowly.
  • Place a drop or two on a cotton ball and place the cotton ball near you.

Topical Application

Many essential oils are safe to use directly on the skin:

  • Place 1-3 drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand or directly on the desired application area. Massage onto the area of concern. Be sure to check the label on each essential oil bottle (or your reference guide) to see if the essential oil should be diluted with a carrier oil (olive oil, coconut oil, Young Living’s V-6 oil, etc).
  • Use one of Young Living’s essential oils that come with a roller ball attached. Or add a roller ball (aka: AromaGlide fitment) to a bottle of essential oil for targeted application. I just love the AromaGlide fitments!

Internal Consumption

internal consumption

Some essential oils make excellent dietary supplements or food flavorings. The label on each bottle of Young Living essential oil will tell you whether it is intended to be used as a dietary supplement. To take essential oils internally, try these tips:

  • Place 1-2 drops into a gelatin capsule and swallow it with water.
  • Add 1-2 drops to a glass of water, NingXia Red, tea, juice, or yogurt.
  • Add 1-2 drops (to taste) to your meals when cooking (I like some of my oils in smoothies).
  • Add 1-2 drops to a teaspoon of honey or agave nectar.
