Essential Oils for Trauma

I’ve been busy trying to summarize some of the awesome oiling info that I learned at the emotional health seminar that I attended last weekend. The speakers at the seminar discussed trauma at length, including the cause of trauma, the problems that can arise from traumatic events, and some ways to release emotional trauma. Because smell is so closely linked to emotion (the amygdala and the hippocampus are located within less than an inch from the olfactory nerve), we learned ways in which essential oils can assist us in bringing up our blocked emotions so that we can finally let go of the trauma that limits us. Below is what I learned about essential oils for trauma. :)

What causes trauma?

We experience trauma throughout our life. Trauma can occur during childhood and adulthood and can result from a seemingly benign experience or from a larger catastrophic event. According to Dr. Corinne Allen (who was summarized during the conference), traumatic events may include (but are not limited to): abandonment, birth trauma, bonding break with a parent, constant criticism and judgment, anger and violence, rape, incest, sexual molestation, car crash, medical or dental surgery, divorce, death of a loved one, suicide of a loved one, forced emigration or loss of homeland, homeless, illness, torture, accident and/or fall, any experience that causes a threat to your life, being physically attacked, or the experience of war.

What does unresolved trauma cause?

Time alone does not heal trauma and if trauma is not properly dealt with, it can unknowingly cause a whole slew of problems. According to Dr. Corinne Allen (who was summarized during the conference), lingering trauma can cause us to feel disconnected and detached, isolated and alone, sad, overwhelmed, fearful, helpless, worried, hyper-vigilant, hyper-active, and many other negative feelings. Trauma can also cause a lack of focus, mood swings, anger outbursts, sensitivity to light and/or sound, nightmares, loss of memory, physical pain or problems, fatigue, relationship turmoil, addictions, weight gain, yo-yo dieting, work stress, personality conflicts, and much more.

How to use Young Living essential oils to let go of trauma:

One way to release the emotional trauma that limits us is to 1) identify and feel the emotion, 2) identify and feel the other side of the emotion, and 3) identify the lesson or way out of an uncomfortable state. The book, “Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils” by Dr. Carolyn Mein, D.C. provides a wealth of information and was referenced throughout the seminar that I was at.

We were provided with and practiced an “Emotional Pattern and Block Clearing Quick Program,” which is described below. You will need to purchase the “Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils” book to do this program (as you will be referencing the charts in the book). The book is affordable and jam-packed with tons of helpful info (way more than I’ll cover below) – I highly suggest purchasing it!

It isn’t required, but you may want to consider combining the below protocol with psychotherapy (especially if your trauma is quite severe). 

How to practice the “Emotional Pattern and Block Clearing Quick Program” (do twice to several times each day for at least seven weeks):

Step 1

In the book, “Releasing Emotional Patterns with Essential Oils,” go to the chapter titled “Emotional Reference.” This chapter includes a chart which lists several different emotions. Identify an emotion that is keeping you stuck and find it on the chart.

Step 2

Use the same chart to find the corresponding essential oil that can assist in releasing that emotional block.

If you do not have the suggested essential oil, you may want to consider trying Idaho Blue Spruce. Idaho Blue Spruce has a the pleasing evergreen aroma that relaxes both the mind and body.

Step 3

Apply a small amount of your essential oil to the palm of your hand (dilute if needed). Apply some of it to your forehead near your hairline and some on your belly button (or on the right foot, on the spot between the large and the second toe). Rub any remaining essential oil into your palms. Cup your hands over your nose and mouth and breath deeply (inhale and exhale three times).

Step 4

Place the right hand over the forehead near the hair line. Then place the left hand over the belly so the little finger is just over the naval (or cross the right leg and place a finger from the left hand on the right foot where you applied the essential oil in step 3). These points are referred to as the “alarm points.”

While keeping your right hand and left finger on the alarm points, say three times (while allowing yourself to feel the negative emotion):

  • “I choose to release the trauma behind the trapped emotion of state your emotion that no longer serves me in a positive and productive way.”

Example: “I choose to release the trauma behind the trapped emotion of anger that no longer serves me in a positive and productive way.”

Step 5

Using the same chart, find the “other side” of your negative emotion and use it to fill in the blank. While keeping your right hand and left finger on the alarm points, say three times (while allowing yourself to feel the “other side” of your negative emotion):

  • “I choose ______________ .”

Example: “I choose laughter.”

Step 6

Using the same chart, find the “way out” and use it to fill in each of the blanks. While keeping your right hand and left finger on the alarm points, say three times, with conviction:

  • “I choose ______________ .”
  • “I manifest ______________ .”
  • “I believe ______________ .”
  • “I declare ______________ .”

Example: “I choose my direction is clear.” “I manifest my direction is clear.” “I believe my direction is clear.” “I declare my direction is clear.”

Repeat

Repeat steps 1-6 twice to several times each day for at least seven weeks (or until the negative emotion is cleared).
